Fungi are microscopic organisms that flourish in dark and moist places and they don’t need sunlight to survive. The most common fungal infection, caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes, is popularly termed as Nail Fungus. Toenail fungus is a living organism that feeds off the keratin that is found in fingernails and toenails. It is usually brown or yellow in appearance. It is a wide spread disease and around 11% of the United States population suffers from nail fungus.
There are many variables as to why someone might get affected by nail fungus. People who sweat heavily or work or live in a humid environment have a higher risk as it provides the perfect growth ambience for fungi. The symptoms generally include discoloration, generally yellow or brown and even green, which is a usual sign of nail fungus and also the nail appears flaky and becomes thick.

Prevention is suggested over treatment. If you live or work in a moist environment, wear protective gloves and wear socks and footwear that breathes and do change them frequently. The treatment options include the oral antifungal medications. Also antifungal lacquer, topical medications, even surgically removing the nail can be considered. The treatment can take up to 6 weeks for fingernails and can take up to 12 weeks for toenails. There can be moderate to serious side effects involved with prescribed medications. If you have liver or heart problems, don’t take any oral medications.
